Isilon OneFS controls the placement of files directly, down to the sector-level on any drive anywhere in the cluster. This allows for optimized data placement and I/O patterns and avoids unnecessary read-modify-write operations. The problems is related to excel and word documents being "locked for editing" by another user or the same user when these files are tried opened. After some investigation it seems to be related to old types of office documents not being very compatible with smb oplocks on Isilon.
